Why Does My Child Refuse to Speak Arabic at Home? (And How to Fix It)

The Arabi App Team

You ask your child a question in perfect Arabic: "Matha thureed an ta'kul?" (What do you want to eat?). They look at you, completely understand what you said, and reply: "I want chicken nuggets."

If this scenario sounds familiar, you are experiencing the most common frustration of bilingual parenting: Receptive Bilingualism. This means your child can understand the language, but they refuse to speak it.

Why does this happen, and more importantly, how do you fix it without starting an argument?

Why They Refuse to Speak

  1. The Path of Least Resistance: Children are highly efficient. If they know you understand English perfectly fine, their brain will automatically choose English because it requires less effort.
  2. Fear of Mistakes: If they are attending an English-speaking school, English is their strong language. Speaking Arabic might make them feel insecure or afraid of being corrected.
  3. Lack of Peer Usage: If they only ever hear adults speaking Arabic, they might subconsciously categorize it as an "adult language" rather than a language for playing and having fun.

How to Fix It (Without Forcing)

1. Play the "I Don't Understand" Game If they reply in English, playfully pretend you didn't hear them or didn't understand. Put a hand to your ear and say, "I'm sorry, my English ears aren't working today! Can you tell me in Arabic?" Keep it lighthearted.

2. Create an "Arabic Only" Zone or Time Designate a specific time (e.g., Dinner time) or a specific physical space (e.g., the car ride to school) as an "Arabic Only" zone. During this time, the whole family must try their best to only use Arabic words.

3. Use Media to Normalize the Language Children need to see that Arabic isn't just a language for talking to grandparents—it is a language for fun! Introduce them to Arabic cartoons, songs, and games.

When they play the Arabi App, they are interacting with the language in a gamified, highly entertaining environment. They will start repeating the words they hear in the app simply because it's fun!
